You know what else pisses me off?

    Censorship.

I hate that some people think they have the right to decide what my child should or should not read in school. That's my job, you twits.

Keep your holy-rollin', judgment-passin', god-fearing proselytizing to yourselves, and don't try to demean, dismiss or discount my efforts as a parent!

Some intrepid kids from our school district launched a website to support the current reading list policy. You can find it here. It also includes a petition, if you're interested in signing.

Me, myself - I think a person should read pretty much anything s/he can get his/her hands on. Of course, no porn or ultra-violent stuff for my kids. But there's nothing wrong with reading the Enquirer or the Star or comic books or cereal boxes or shampoo bottles or Stephen King or Barbara Cartland or the occasional blog.

To me, most any reading is good reading. And I think kids need variety and exposure to different genres and styles and subjects in order to expand their minds. At high school age, previously taboo subjects often serve to open much-needed discussions between kids and kids, kids and teachers, and kids and parents. We're trying to help them grow, not shelter them from age-appropriate experiences and exploration.

If you don't want your kid to read a certain book, fine. Just don't try to tell me how to parent, even if I do fuck it up occasionally.

Ummm do the people promoting these books being banned for sexual content KNOW that kids watch tv and LIVE in this world and what they will get exposed to in the books mentioned is ridiuclously limited compared to what life deals them?

You are right it is not the school's choice to censor. I say the PTA should get togeher, raise some money and if the book ban goes through buy those books for each classroom!
